Your True Bra Size: A How-To

Why most women are wearing the wrong bra size — and how a single fitting changes everything.

Here is something that may surprise you: research consistently shows that the majority of American women are wearing the wrong bra size. Not by a little — often by several sizes. A band too loose. A cup too small. A fit that works around the body rather than with it.

This is not a reflection of anything other than the fact that bra sizing is genuinely nuanced, and that most of us were never taught how it works. We chose a size once, perhaps in our teens or early twenties, and carried it forward — through bodies that changed, through seasons and decades, without ever pausing to question it.

HOW BRA SIZING ACTUALLY WORKS

A bra size is made up of two measurements: the band size, which is the number, and the cup size, which is the letter. Together they define the fit — but neither number alone tells the full story.

The band does the majority of the work. It should sit firmly and level across the back, parallel to the floor, providing the foundation that supports the bust. When the band is too loose, the bra rides up at the back and the straps carry weight they were never designed to bear — which leads, over time, to discomfort, shoulder strain, and a fit that simply never feels right.

The cup size is a relationship, not a fixed measure. It describes the difference between the bust measurement and the band measurement. This is where the concept of sister sizes becomes essential.

UNDERSTANDING SISTER SIZES

Every bra size belongs to a family of "sister sizes" — sizes that share the same cup volume but in different band and cup letter combinations. Moving up a band size and down a cup letter, or down a band size and up a cup letter, gives you the same cup volume in a different fit profile.

For example: 34C — 36B — 32D are all sister sizes. The cup volume is identical. Only the band length changes.

Why does this matter? Because the way a bra fits the body depends on proportion as well as measurement. A woman between sizes may find her truest fit in a sister size rather than the size the tape measure suggests. It also matters when shopping across brands — because sizing varies. Knowing your sister sizes gives you flexibility and confidence across any collection.

THE FIT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

THE BAND — Sits level and snug all the way around, parallel to the floor at the back. You should be able to slide two fingers underneath, but it should spring back firmly when released. On a new bra, fasten on the loosest hook — there is room to tighten as the fabric softens with wear.

THE CUPS — The fabric lies smooth and close against the bust with no gaping, wrinkling, or spillage. The underwire, if present, rests flat against the ribcage beneath the bust — not on the breast tissue.

THE STRAPS — Comfortable on the shoulders without digging in. The band does the foundational work — if you find yourself constantly adjusting straps, the band is worth revisiting.

THE OVERALL FEELING — Ease. A bra that fits beautifully simply disappears — it supports without constraining, lifts without pinching, and lets you move through your day with complete comfort and quiet confidence.

WHY SIZING CHANGES — AND WHY THAT IS SIMPLY PART OF THE STORY

Bodies change. Weight shifts, hormones fluctuate, pregnancies and surgeries leave their mark. Revisiting your fit every year or two is one of the simplest, most rewarding acts of self-care available. The difference it makes — in comfort, in confidence, in how you carry yourself — is quietly profound.
